Therapist in Tufnell Park – Somatic-Cognitive Therapy North London
Tufnell Park is a quiet residential corner of North London, sitting between Kentish Town, Archway, and Holloway. If you're based here and looking for a therapist, I work with young professionals from across this part of the city at my practice in St John's Wood, NW8. My name is Carlos Monteiro. I offer somatic-cognitive therapy for people dealing with confidence, self-doubt, people-pleasing, and social anxiety, using a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and somatic, body-based awareness.
Many of the people I work with from Tufnell Park and nearby streets are high-functioning and self-aware. They've often thought carefully about what's holding them back. They know the pattern: the reluctance to assert themselves, the habit of shrinking in certain situations, the low-level anxiety that doesn't respond to logic alone. What tends to be missing isn't insight but a way of working that actually shifts things. Confidence and ease aren't just cognitive states — they have a physical dimension too, and that's where the somatic element of this work becomes useful.
CBT gives us a structured way to examine the beliefs and thought patterns driving avoidance, people-pleasing, and self-doubt. The somatic practice brings attention to how those patterns live in the body: the bracing before a difficult moment, the shallow breath before speaking up, the postural habits that reinforce a sense of being held back. Working at both levels at once means the changes tend to feel more complete and more durable.

Somatic Therapy
Body-based awareness to help you notice and release the physical patterns that accompany stress and self-doubt.
Anxiety Therapy
Support for those who overthink, feel overwhelmed, or carry a persistent sense of unease into work and daily life.
My Approach
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) provides a practical framework for understanding how thoughts, feelings, and behaviour connect. We identify the patterns keeping you in cycles of avoidance or self-criticism, and develop more useful ways of responding to the situations that trigger them.
Somatic practice attends to the body's role in these patterns. Anxiety and low confidence aren't purely mental experiences: they show up in how you hold yourself, how your breathing changes under pressure, and the physical habits that have become so familiar they're almost invisible. Bringing awareness to these creates room for something to shift at a deeper level.
The two approaches work together to address both sides of the picture, rather than treating mind and body as separate problems.

What to Expect
Sessions are 50 minutes and take place at my practice in St John's Wood, NW8. I offer a free 20-minute consultation before we begin, with no commitment required. It's a chance to talk through what's brought you to therapy and get a sense of whether the approach feels right. The sessions themselves are collaborative and practical, shaped by what's actually happening in your life.
Getting Here from Tufnell Park
Tufnell Park station is on the Northern line. The most practical route to the practice is to take the Northern line south to Camden Town, then the 46 bus westward to St John's Wood, stopping close to Violet Hill. The total journey takes around 20 to 25 minutes. Alternatively, a short journey to Kentish Town connects with a Thameslink to West Hampstead, where the Jubilee line runs directly to St John's Wood Underground station. Street parking is available near the practice for those travelling by car.
