Therapist in Stoke Newington – Somatic-Cognitive Therapy North London

If you're based in Stoke Newington and looking for a therapist who works with both mind and body, I'm Carlos Monteiro. I work with young professionals from N16 at my practice between Maida Vale and St John's Wood in NW8, helping with confidence, people-pleasing and social anxiety. My approach combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with body-based awareness drawn from the Alexander Technique.

People I see from Stoke Newington and across Hackney often describe the same thing. Life looks good from the outside, yet they hold back in meetings, find it hard to say no, or feel self-conscious in social settings they would like to enjoy.

CBT gives us a framework for understanding the thoughts that keep those patterns going. Somatic work adds attention to the physical side: the tension, shallow breathing and bracing that tend to appear in exactly the moments you most want to feel at ease.

How I Can Help

Confidence Therapy

For those who feel held back, second-guess themselves, or struggle to feel fully like themselves at work or in daily life.

People Pleasing Therapy

For those who over-extend, struggle to say no, or put everyone else's needs first at cost to themselves.

Social Anxiety Therapist

For those who feel on edge around others, hold back in social situations, or struggle to speak up freely.

CBT Therapy

Practical, structured support for changing the thought patterns and beliefs that keep you stuck.

Somatic Therapy

Body-based awareness to help you notice and release the physical patterns that accompany stress and self-doubt.

Anxiety Therapy

Support for those who overthink, feel overwhelmed, or carry a persistent sense of unease into work and daily life.

My Approach

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you recognise the links between what you think, how you feel and what you do. We work on the specific beliefs that drive self-doubt or over-accommodating others, and build practical alternatives you can use straight away.

Somatic practice (Alexander Technique) focuses on the body's part in those experiences. By noticing habitual tension and learning to release it, you can meet stressful moments with more steadiness.

Bringing the two together means we are working on the whole picture, not just one half of it.

What to Expect

Sessions are 50 minutes long and held at my practice between Maida Vale and St John's Wood. I offer a free 20-minute consultation first, with no obligation, so we can talk about what you're looking for and whether the approach suits you. The sessions themselves are practical and collaborative.

Getting Here from Stoke Newington

The most direct option from Stoke Newington is the 73 bus, which runs through Islington and King's Cross to Oxford Circus. From there, the Bakerloo line goes straight to Maida Vale, about a 7-minute walk from the practice. Alternatively, the 106 bus connects to Finsbury Park for the Victoria line, changing at Green Park for the Jubilee line to St John's Wood. Allow around 45 to 55 minutes. Street parking is available near the practice.
