Therapist in Gospel Oak – Somatic-Cognitive Therapy North London

Gospel Oak is a quiet residential neighbourhood sitting at the southern edge of Hampstead Heath, between Hampstead, Belsize Park, and Kentish Town. If you're based here and looking for a therapist, I work with young professionals from across this part of North London at my practice in St John's Wood, NW8. My name is Carlos Monteiro, and I offer somatic-cognitive therapy for people dealing with social anxiety, people-pleasing, self-doubt, and confidence. I combine CBT with somatic, body-based awareness to work with both the thinking and the physical patterns behind these difficulties.

People who come to me from Gospel Oak and the surrounding streets are often reflective and already have a good sense of what they're dealing with. They know they hold back, or that they find it hard to put themselves first, or that anxiety tends to surface in predictable situations. What hasn't changed yet is the pattern itself. Understanding something and shifting it are genuinely different things, and that's where therapy tends to help.

Social anxiety, for example, rarely lives only in the mind. It shows up in how you hold yourself when you walk into a room, in the voice that tightens before you speak, in the breath that shortens in the moment before something feels risky. CBT gives us a framework for working with the thoughts driving those responses. The somatic element brings awareness to the body itself, so we're working with the full picture rather than just one part of it.

Anxiety Therapy

My Approach

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps us understand the thinking patterns that keep you in cycles of self-doubt, avoidance, or putting others first. The aim is not just to identify them but to develop practical ways of responding differently when they arise in everyday situations.

Somatic practice works with the physical dimension of these patterns. Anxiety, low confidence, and social difficulty all have a bodily component: the way you hold yourself, the habit of bracing or shrinking in certain situations. Bringing gentle awareness to these, without forcing a change, creates room for something different to emerge naturally.

Working with both mind and body means the changes tend to be more complete and more durable than either approach achieves on its own.

What to Expect

Sessions are 50 minutes and take place at my practice in St John's Wood, NW8. Before we begin, I offer a free 20-minute consultation: a chance to talk through what's brought you to therapy and get a sense of whether the approach is right for you, with no commitment required. The sessions themselves are collaborative and shaped by what's actually happening in your life.

Getting Here from Gospel Oak

Gospel Oak station is on the London Overground. The most practical route to the practice is by bus: the C11 connects Gospel Oak to Swiss Cottage and the St John's Wood area, and the 46 runs from nearby Kentish Town through to St John's Wood, with a journey time of around 20 to 25 minutes. Maida Vale Underground station (Bakerloo line) is a short walk from the practice and is reachable via a change at Finchley Road. Street parking is available on Violet Hill for those travelling by car.
