Therapist in Chalk Farm – Somatic CBT North London

Are you looking for a therapist near Chalk Farm?

If you're searching for a therapist near Chalk Farm, I'm Carlos Monteiro, a somatic cognitive therapist working with young professionals across North London. My practice is conveniently located between Maida Vale and St John's Wood, accessible from Chalk Farm via the Northern Line in around 20 minutes.

I work with people who are navigating the weight of modern professional life: the creeping exhaustion of high-pressure work, the anxiety that doesn't switch off when the laptop closes, and the quiet erosion of confidence that can come with high-achieving environments. What makes my approach different is that it works at two levels simultaneously. Using CBT, we look at the thought patterns and beliefs that maintain stress. Using the Alexander Technique and other somatic practices, we work with how that stress lives in your body: the tension, the shallow breathing, the physical habits that reinforce anxiety from the inside out.

Supporting Young Professionals

Many of the people I work with are in their late twenties to early forties and have reached a point where the usual coping strategies are no longer working. Therapy can provide both the tools and the space to make real changes. Areas I regularly work with include:

  • Chronic workplace stress and the early stages of burnout
  • Anxiety: generalised worry, overthinking, and difficulty relaxing
  • Confidence challenges, including imposter syndrome
  • Performance anxiety in professional settings
  • Physical stress responses: tension, jaw clenching, disrupted sleep
  • Career transitions and the identity pressures they bring
  • Work-life balance and difficulty setting boundaries

An Integrative Approach: CBT and the Alexander Technique

My work brings together two well-established disciplines. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and specifically Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), offers a practical framework for understanding and changing the thinking that drives stress and anxiety. It is evidence-based, structured, and particularly well-suited to people who want to understand what is happening for them, not just manage the symptoms.

The Alexander Technique adds a somatic dimension that most talking therapies don't address. It works with the physical habits, postural patterns, and ways of using your body that often reinforce mental tension. When both levels are engaged, the work tends to go further and last longer. What to Expect

Each session is 50 minutes. My practice is between Maida Vale and St John's Wood Underground stations, making it straightforward to reach from across North London. We begin with an initial consultation to understand your situation and set some clear goals. Sessions are collaborative throughout: part practical skill-building, part deeper exploration of the patterns that have brought you here. Read more about how sessions work on the what to expect in therapy page.

Qualifications and Background

I hold a certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy from the College of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CCBT), with a specialism in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), and I am accredited with the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). As a certified Alexander Technique teacher, I trained at the Alexander Technique Training School (ATTS) in London and have been teaching since 2017. I am a member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT). Before moving into therapy, I worked in business and marketing, which has shaped how I understand the particular pressures that professionals carry. More about my background is on the about and approach page.
